Serving Opportunity Where It’s Needed Most
Later in the summer, we turned our focus to access. In a community where more than 70% of students face economic disadvantage, in collaboration we organized a weeklong Tennis Camp designed to remove barriers and bring the game to kids who wouldn’t otherwise have the chance. The response was overwhelming; over 50 young athletes showed up, some of them picking up a racquet for the very first time.
Each day of camp began with warm-ups, skill drills, and team-building exercises. But what unfolded over the course of the week went far beyond the basics of serves and volleys. Students who started off timid and hesitant grew more confident as the days went on, pushing themselves to rally longer, move faster, and cheer louder for one another. By the final session, the courts buzzed with excitement, and the athletes who had once been strangers were leaving as teammates and friends.
Stories of Transformation
The most powerful outcomes came not just from what we observed, but from what families shared with us. One mother explained,
“My daughter never thought she could play tennis. This camp showed her that she can—and she’s already asking when the next one is.”
Dionna Gordon – Parent
For many of these families, opportunities like this are rare. Camps often come with price tags that place them out of reach. By making our program free and accessible, we created not just a week of tennis, but an environment where students could feel equal, capable, and valued.
Beyond the Court
What makes this camp so important is that its impact stretches far beyond athletics. When a student discovers they can succeed at something they thought was out of reach, that confidence translates into other areas of their lives, schoolwork, friendships, and future ambitions. We saw that spark ignite across dozens of kids during the week, and we know it will continue to ripple outward.
This camp wasn’t about creating star tennis players. It was about planting seeds of courage, resilience, and community. It was about leveling the playing field and proving that access to opportunity should never depend on background or circumstance. For Mind and Momentum, it was one of the clearest demonstrations yet of our mission in action.
